Earsplitting Noise - all the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors going off

I now fully understand the term "earsplitting".
Yesterday, we were having a nice calm lunch when all of a sudden there was a VERY LOUD noise. For no reason whatsoever all the smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors went off all together at the same time (that is by far, the loudest most high-pitch noise I have ever heard)... There are seven total around my house. I not only had to take the batteries out of them but also pull them all down from the ceiling in order to make them stop the incessant beeping. Of course to take them down I had to unfortunately be within reach of them. It took forever for my ears to stop ringing. I understand the need for having that many, but cant there be one off switch to reset all of them? That would make it too easy and less painful. - Writing this post just made me think of something, and sure enough I'm right! I just looked and there is a breaker switch in my garage for the alarms. The question is, would flipping that switch make them stop beeping or would I still have to take all the batteries out? Well, if flipping the breaker at least stopped the loud constant beeping that would help.

One of them is still beeping periodically despite no battery and no electrical connection... That one is now in my garage so I dont have to listen to it. - I totally felt like Phoebe on Friends, did you ever see that episode?
One of my neighbors has had problems with hers going off for no reason, a short in the wiring or something. Luckily since I live on base all I have to do it call maintenance and they will come check it out and re-install them for me. I only hope they dont go of again. At least it didn't happen in the middle of the night, or nap time. That would have been a VERY rude awakening.

Seven Layer Dip - Best Party Dish EVER!

It has become expected of me that whenever I am at a social gathering I MUST bring my Seven Layer Dip. It's SO good, everyone loves it! Every time I make it, it gets devoured! I think if I showed up at my neighbors house without it she wouldn't let me in... TeeHee.

Guacamole Ingredients (make it fresh or buy it, Ive done both):
2 avocados - peeled, pitted and diced
1 tsp garlic salt
2 tbs fresh lime juice
-- OR -- I buy Ortega brand 11.5 oz jar

Dip Ingredients:
1 (1 ounce) package taco seasoning mix
1 (16 ounce) can refried beans
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (16 ounce) container sour cream
1 (16 ounce) jar chunky salsa
1 (4 ounce) can sliced black olives, drained
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
2/3 bags Tostitos Scoops

Guacamole Directions:
In a medium bowl, mash the avocados and stir in salt. Mix in the lime juice. Cover and chill in the refrigerator at least 30 minutes

Dip Directions:
1. In a medium bowl, blend the taco seasoning mix and refried beans. Spread the mixture onto a large serving platter (13x9 inch glass dish works the best).
2. Mix the sour cream and cream cheese in a medium bowl. Spread over the refried beans. Then spread layer of Guacamole on top.
3. Top the layers with salsa, then Cheddar cheese. Garnish with black olives.

Bake at 350 for 15-20 minutes

Toy Packaging is Ridiculous, Annoying, Excessive, Frustrating, Just plain ticks me off

Today I finally got around to taking the kids shopping with the Birthday money they were given by my Mother.
They had $50 each. Princess was very exited to get to pick out whatever she wanted! I helped Bobo pick his stuff out, he got a bunch of different cars! One of the items Princess got was a baby doll that talks and sings.
The way this doll was packaged is somewhat disturbing. Usually I can manage to cut the wires with scissors but not this time, so I had to un-twist them all.... UGH... (All the while, Princess keeps telling her Baby, "Its OK Baby, I'm going to get you out") There were wires around the dolls neck, both wrists, feet, legs, and both her pig-tails. REALLY, is all that necessary?!? Toy manufactures come up with the coolest toys these days but they cant come up with a better - Less frustrating/annoying - way to package the toys? Especially the dolls so it doesn't look like there being tortured.
Princess also picked out a Barbie, which was a little easier. There were rubber bands binding the Barbie into her box which are easy to cut. But still the annoying strip holding the hair down.

The last two Christmas's hubby and I opened whatever packaging we could on toys "Before" we wrapped them. That way, Christmas morning your not stuck doing it all morning. Hands are free to take pictures and kids are happy to be able to play with their toys right out of the box!

Whoever said Orange was the new Pink was seriously disturbed

I love this movie! Quite possibility one of my all time favorites.
It's funny, about 8 years ago, I didn't like pink. Then, I found out I was having a girl and all of a sudden I was hunting for pink baby stuff all the time. Then I started buying myself pink clothes. Now, I have so many different pink shirts I have to force myself to buy other colors... I even have a pink purse.
Princess's favorite colors are Pink, Orange and Purple.

In case you dont know, this is a clip from the movie "Legally Blonde" (the first one).

Postcard Swap: Colorado 5 of 50

From the mail today! This is the state I was exited to get! I was born there and spent the first 23 years of my life in Colorado!
The back of the postcard reads:
"Colorado is the 38th state. Colorado is home to the largest sand dune in America. (I didn't know that) Colorado has 52 mountains over 14,000 feet tall."

Every week a family from a different state sends out their postcards (in theory we should receive 1 card each week). Click the Topic link "Postcard Swap" below to see the other cards we have gotten so far!

Some People Shouldnt Be Parents

We have one of those particular people in my neighborhood. This one instance happened a few weeks ago and it keeps popping into my head so I must post about it. I figure its Highly unlikely this person reads my blog, even if they do, I really dont care...
The housing is set up so that there are two rows of houses facing each other (8 houses on each side), with community space in between. If I go out my front door and walk a dozen or so feet straight forward I will end up on someone else's front doorstep. There is a sidewalk leading from each door with a long sidewalk down the middle of the houses. There are streets behind the houses where our garages are and and at each end of the row.
A few weeks ago, one of the neighborhood moms was out in the community area setting up a slip-in-slide ON THE SIDEWALK. Yes, that's right, she thought it was a good idea to put it directly on the sidewalk. Why would you think its a good idea to have your child run and jump onto cement, a piece of plastic isn't going to soften it up?
Luckily one of my other neighbors saw what she was doing and informed her that is was NOT a good idea. So she then moved it onto the grass. Some people just dont have any common since.
(I had to do a diagram so this all makes since: green-grass, gray-sidewalk, obviously)
The red rectangle is where the slip-in-slide got moved too. Still not the safest place, but luckily the kids are young and dont really get/cant do the running-sliding part.

This is just one of the instances involving this persons lack of parenting ability.
The oldest child, who's 5 I believe, is always outside by herself completely unsupervised. I really think they kick her out of the house and tell her to stay outside. She is always asking the other neighbors for food, and if asked what her mom is doing she responds either watching TV or playing video games.
One day I was driving back home and saw her down by the street talking to the base maintenance workers.
There is a new playground across the street that should be opening up any day now and I totally wouldn't be surprised if this child is over there playing alone.

I'm not a perfect parent and I dont claim to be, but I supervise my kids and know what there doing and who there talking to and I have common since.

Aloha Friday #28 Karaoke

Aloha Friday
This Weeks Question:
Have you Ever, or would you ever sing Karaoke in a public place?

A: I have, and so has my husband. We went to a Karaoke bar with my sister and her friends when we were first dating and we both sang a song, not together. I might do it again if I was out and my friends with me were doing it too. I'm not usually a "follower" but I'm not brave enough to sing Karaoke unless people I know are doing it too.

Answer my question in a comment. Play along, write your own "Aloha Friday" post then leave your link with Mr. Linky and Ill be sure to stop by and answer your question!

Geckos and Frogs and Pigeons, O-My

A few weeks ago my neighbor S was over and as she was leaving a lizard ran in the door!!! Instantly my wonderful cat Ginger ran after it and caught it in her mouth. S tried to get her to go out the door with it but Ginger wanted to play, she let it go so she could chase it and caught it again. Then Ginger let it go and the lizard ran under my couch. I'm freaking out because I dont want a lizard living in my house!
Luckily Ginger was watching and the lizard wasn't very smart because it ran out from under the couch and Ginger caught it again and carried it over under my dining room table where she let it go again.
The lizard was obviously injured from being bitten because it just sat there where Ginger had dropped it. Ginger was waiting for it to run again so she could play some more!
I got a large Tupperware bowl and carefully (yes, I was scared of the lizard) put it upside down on top of it to trap it. S had the idea to scoot the bowl across the floor to the door where we would scoot it out.
So, I did that and of course Ginger followed me the whole way. She wanted to keep her new friend (I wonder if she would have eaten it if given the chance, yuck). I had to hold Ginger and S managed to use the bowl to get the lizard out the door. It just sat there on my door mat for a while, I'm assuming it crawled away somewhere and died from its injuries. Sorry, that's what happens when you enter a house with a cat.
Thanks to Google I'm pretty sure the lizard was a type of Gecko, buy who knows, I wasn't going to examine the thing to find out... It was definitely bigger than the little ones I'm used to seeing. I see tiny ones in my garage all the time, the more I think about it I'm surprised that's the first time a lizard has gotten in the house.... I better be quite, I'm gonna "ginks" myself. Knock On Wood. I only hope it wasn't the Geico Gecko, LOL.

Ever seen a flattened frog? Its gross, and there not tiny ones, I saw one almost the size of my hand once. I'm not sure where exactly they live on base, but I see flattened frogs in the road all the time... Poor Kermit.

I saw a Pigeon going into the school office today, he must have been in trouble. They wonder into the classrooms all the time.
Did you know there are Pigeons in Hawaii? There all over the place... They drive me crazy. They poo all over everything. The wonderful contractors who designed the housing, were very considerate of the Pigeons, they built wonderful homes for them on the roofs. I hear them on the roof outside my bedroom window all the time.
Sorry Bert, I dont agree with you...

Postcard Swap Display

I finally found what I wanted to display our postcards and also to show Princess where all the states are! The map is actually a place mat, but I think it works quite well. The colors make it easier to see each state, and more pleasing to look at! I used white yarn to connect the thumb tacks from the state on the map to the post card. I wanted different colored thumb tacks but couldn't find any.
(Sorry about the glare, its a place mat so its laminated. Click the picture to make it bigger)(I just noticed, apparently the date is wrong on my camera, oops, I took this picture today)

Cats can "Go Green" too with the Cat Genie

My solution to loving my cat and hating the cat box, The Cat Genie 120!
I found this online and HAD to have it! Not only do I NOT have to clean a litter box anymore but also if we ever want to go on vacation we dont have to bribe someone to come over and clean the littler box EVERY day. The Cat Genie is like a toilet for your cat! It hooks up to cold water and a drains through either a laundry room drain or bathroom toilet.
I got mine online through The Cat Genie is on-sale and it was the only site I found that would ship here and not charge me an "arm and a leg" for it. SmartHome only charged $14 for shipping. I also ordered the optional sidewalls and GenieDome to give my kitty more privacy and also so the litter granules dont get kicked out as much.

The Cat Genie uses washable granules instead of litter which are washed, sanitized and reused. No more scooping cat litter into bags that go into landfills. Cat's can Go Green! It even has a "cat activation". There are sensors that know when the cat is in there and will automatically run a cleaning cycle 10 minutes after the cat leaves! I love it!
Description from the web site:
"This cat litter box connects to your bathroom or laundry room water line to flush cat waste out of your house, automatically washing, sanitizing, and drying your pet's bathroom area to leave it dust, odor, and germ free."
(No, that is not my bathroom, but my cat is orange)

At the end of this video the guy says you dont have to change the litter for 90 days but that's not accurate. You NEVER have to change the washable granules. They do get tracked out of the Cat Genie on the cats paws unfortunately so the granules will require replenishment on occasion.
This is my Cat Genie with and without the Dome. I have mine in the Laundry room. And let me say, I am quite proud of myself that I was able to get it hooked up to the water and drain all by myself! I haven't been able to get a picture of my cat Ginger in it as of yet.

I was not paid to write this post nor did I receive my Cat Genie for free or at a discount. I did however sign up as an affiliate for Smart Home After I purchased my Cat Genie. I wrote this post because I think every cat owner would love a Cat Genie and I wanted to share my opinion on it!

Aloha Friday #27 Coffee

What's Aloha Friday? It all started at An Island Life
In Hawaii, Friday is the day to relax and take it easy. So, I take it easy on posting!
Aloha Friday
I ask a question and you answer it in a comment. Play along and write your own "Aloha Friday" post then leave your link with Mr. Linky and Ill be sure to stop by and answer your question!

Question of the day:
Are you a coffee drinker? If so, how much do you drink per day, how do you like it, how long have you been a coffee drinker?

A: Once upon a time I use to say "Orange Juice is my Coffee". Those days are long gone. I became a coffee drinker about 4 years ago. I only like flavored coffee, w/ flavored creamer in it. I have one large cup every morning. On occasion I will have another cup in the afternoon or If I'm out somewhere that has great iced/flavored coffee I will get one.

Random Ramblings

Body Spray-Weather-Humidity-Light Switches:

Is is really necessary for Hawaii to have weather reporters? The weather doesn't fluctuate much throughout the entire year. Even in the "Winter" the high is still in the mid 70's. And if anything major is happening like a hurricane, tsunami, tropical storm, the News Reporters are the ones who "report" it all anyway.

How warm and humid of a climate do I have to live in in order to NOT have dry skin. I would think that living here my dry skin would be gone. Granted it is 90% better than when I lived in Colorado. Winter's there were torture on my skin. My skin was so dry and sensitive when I was a "tween" that I couldn't wear jeans unless I wore pantyhose underneath. The seams of the jeans would rub my legs raw. Luckily I grew out of that, I wonder if it had anything to do with the fact that it was also around the time I began shaving my legs...

I like to use scented body spray when I put clean sheets on my bed to make them smell really good.

Without School, I am so getting lost on what day of the week it is... The days just mesh together.

There are light switches in my house that I NEVER use. Not because it doesn't work but because the light it turns on I never need. There are two lights I never use and there both inside the house.
