Mommy My Fishy Light Is On

Best Idea I ever had as a parent. For all of you who have kids who like to get up at the “But Crack of Dawn” (really early in the morning) try this:
A while back my daughter kept waking up at 6:00 in the morning and wanting to stay-up. NO - if she gets up that early she will be a grouch by late afternoon because she has not taken a nap since she was 3. I would send her back to bed and she would come back out every 30 minutes wanting to know if it was time to get up yet.
Then I had my brilliant idea: She has a Fish night light in her room, I plugged it into a timer and set the timer to turn on at 7:30 p.m. - Bedtime and turn off at 8:00 a.m. when it’s time for her to get up. So, not only does she know when it’s time to get out of bed in the morning, but she also knows when it’s time to go to bed at night.
Now if she wakes up too early she will stay in bed until her light turns off. She knows she can get out of bed to go potty and then go back to bed. Sometimes she will go back to sleep in the morning and other times she gets toys and plays quietly until her light goes off.

It’s funny, she will never admit to being tired, but when she is I have seen her watching her room to see if her light is on yet and she will make comments about her Fishy Lights going to be on soon.

  1. What an awesome idea! I've never seen a night light with a timer where did you find the fishy one?

  3. that's a fantastic idea....but what do you do when you don't use a night light? My kids are "must be pitch dark to sleep in my room thankyouverymuch" (much like their mama, that's for sure). So the light will wake my son up (man, I am GLAD I don't live in Germany anymore, where the sun rose at 4:30 a.m. and set at 10:30 p.m. in the summer...I'd BE DEAD by now). We've tried all sorts of things...but once the sun is up, the boy is up too. It wears ME out.

  4. If you don't use a night light I would use an alarm clock that plays music. Have it come on playing quiet music that would not wake them up if they were still sleeping but if their awake will signify time to get up.
